 Nepra nods Chashma hydel project

ISLAMABAD: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has approved the Chashma Hydropower project despite strong opposition of Sindh, while formal licence to the company would be issued within few days.
Informed sources said Monday that the project after completion would generate 44MW electricity. Sources said that the Punjab government had requested the Nepra to allow it starting hydropower projects at Chashma and it was also discussed in the Indus River System Authority (IRSA) meeting in which three provinces besides Sindh agreed.
Sindh, sources said, opposed the project on the grounds that it would harm the province and water it is receiving from Chashma would be stopped, which would barren Sindh, however, it added, it was the company of Punjab and would benefit it. The Nepra officials conducted public hearing of the project by Punjab and approved it.
When Online contacted Registrar Nepra, Safir Hussain for comments, he said that the authority did not approve the project unilaterally but after public hearings, in which respondents presented views.-Online
