 President gifts protection to women

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari signed the Protection Against Harassment of Women at the Workplace Bill 2010 at a ceremony here Tuesday. It was recently adopted by the National Assembly and the Senate. Speaking on the occasion, the President held out an assurance that the government would do its utmost to ensure that women enjoy rights as equal partners of men at the end of its tenure.
He said, "We have to create a Pakistan where coming generations can be proud of the fact that they live as equals". Zardari said the government would make sure that those who are trying to harm the ideology of the Quaid about equality of men and women in Pakistan shall not succeed.
The President said Islam and all other religions have respected and given rights, dignity and honour to women. It is the tradition created by men to prove women as a weaker sex.
He said the government is carrying forward the vision of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto for empowerment of women. He said women empowerment would give the world the much-needed soft touch in the backdrop of too much horror.
The bill is aimed at creating a safe working environment for women, which is free from harassment, abuse and intimidation. It will provide equal opportunity for men and women and their rights to earn a livelihood without fear or discrimination. The bill requires all organisations to adopt an internal code of conduct and a complaint and appeals mechanism for all working women.-NNI
