SSGC working hard to save Zamzama gas field

KARACHI: Managing Director Sui Southren Gas Company Dr Faizullah Abbasi, has instructed the Company's engineers to utilise all available resources to save the field and adjoining areas around it from inundating, said a press release issued here on Thursday.
The fresh floods totally inundated two wells of Zamzama Gas Field which forced the BHP management to close down the remaining six wells with effect from September 3. The closures led to BHP decreasing its gas production to SSGC and SNGPL from 430 mmcfd to 208 mmcfd which caused SSGC to promptly implement gas load management plan.
The sudden shortfall was managed by curtailing gas to KESC, Kotri Power Plant, Jamshoro Power Plant, Fauji Power Plant and other bulk customers. Similarly, SNGPL too faced difficulties as a result in shortfall of gas and had to curtail the supply to the power plants in its franchise areas.
Sudden fall in the production of Zamzama gas field caused tremendous inconvenience to the consumers. In the wake of this development, Dr Faizullah Abbasi, MD, SSGC and Abdul Rashid Lone, MD, SNGPL visited the Gas field and the areas around it to personally inspect the sudden inflow of flood water and formulate a plan to utilise all possible resources to alleviate the damage in and around the Field.
BHP's Field Manager Geoff Watson gave a detailed briefing to the MDs of both the utilities at the premises of the plant about the magnitude of the damage in and around the Field. Watson informed them that Main North Valley Drain (MNVD) which flows close to Zamzama Gas Field has the capacity to hold 3,200 to 3,500 cusecs of water per day in normal circumstances while the flow of water has increased by 8,000 to 10,000 cusecs of water, further aggravating the situation. The rising water level at the left side of the bank had the potential of inundating Zamzama Gas Field. Talking to the media, Dr Abbasi said that swift action from SSGC has ensured that Zamzama Gas Field remains out of danger. He added that on the Company's request, the management of Zamzama Gas Field made its wells operational with the result that the gas production increased by 75 per cent from the morning of September 8.-PR
