ISLAMABAD: The government has planned to construct 32 small and medium dams in all provinces with an estimated cost of Rs250 billion to bridge the gap between supply and demand of electricity. The government has allocated Rs250 billion for the construction of these dams during the PSDP of 2009/10, official source told this agency on Tuesday. Out of these dams, 13 dams would be constructed in first-phase and work on some dams had already been started, he said. He said five dams would be constructed in Balochistan, four in Sindh, two in NWFP and Punjab each. An amount of Rs23.439 million has been spent so far on the projects, he said. He said the Ministry of Water and Power has assigned Munda Dam Project on Swat River to WAPDA for detailed engineering design and its construction would be initiated after clearance from court cases. The source said Gomal Zam Dam, Kurram Tangi Dam, Munda Dam, Bara Dam, Chowkas Dam and Totakan Dam were under construction or under engineering study. He said these dams would be multi-purpose and would be both for irrigation and generating hydel power.-PPI
